Bike & Hike Trail bridge completion delayed
A new trail bridge for a project in northern Summit County has been delayed. The bridge to carry traffic on the Bike & Hike Trail across Interstate 271 in Sagamore Hills and Northfield Center townships won’t be ready until late February.Fabrication problems at the Pittsburgh-area company building the 300-foot-long bridge are causing the delay, Ohio Department of Transportation spokesman Justin Chesnic said, citing wrong steel used on one section of the bridge. The state must still pour a concrete deck for the bridge, and that will depend heavily on the weather cooperating, Chesnic said. That means the full project probably won’t be completed before spring.Earlier, Metro Parks, Serving Summit County had said the trail-only bridge would be delivered about Dec. 1, assembled and installed within a week or so.The bridge is part of a $2.6 million project to improve safety along the Bike & Hike Trail. The project, proposed nine years ago, will get pedestrians and bicyclists off busy Brandywine Road with its two hills and fast-moving vehicles. The rerouting takes the trail off Brandywine Road for about one mile. The trail now loops around Brandywine Falls and the Inn at Brandywine Falls, then runs north on the west side of Brandywine Road to reconnect with the existing route that continues into Cuyahoga County. The old trail section was considered dangerous, especially for families with small children and for inexperienced bicyclists.Bicyclists and hikers heading north on the old trail were forced to pedal or walk along two-lane Brandywine Road in Northfield Center Township, where traffic moves at 40 mph. There is a steep drop to I-271 and Brandywine Falls, followed by a steep climb.Construction began in May.Project partners are Metro Parks, Serving Summit County, the National Park Service, the Ohio Department of Transportation and Summit County Engineer Alan Brubaker’s office.Bob Downing can be reached at 330-996-3745 or bdowning@thebeaconjournal.com.
